Big Li is releasing another pot of Brazilian turtles again. He has been to many places to release lives, including park pools and river ponds. It's not that he has any religious beliefs, but he heard that releasing animals is a good deed and it can eliminate disasters and bring blessings. Big Li is my neighbor, he once asked me, "Is releasing animals a good deed?"
I told him, firstly, there is "historical limitation". A few hundred years ago, in the era without invasive species, releasing animals could be considered a good deed, at least it didn't harm the ecological balance. As times change, the impact of humans on the environment is different from the past. Whether releasing animals is a good deed needs to be understood within the context of balance. Otherwise, good intentions may not lead to good deeds. Secondly, there is " Jue (Perception) Shi (Cognition) limitation". Confined by Jue (Perception) Shi (Cognition) and ignorant of balance, people release animals in hope of earning merit, but they act selfishly under the guise of doing good. Isn't that self-righteous and ignorant? Releasing tropical fish into northern rivers or setting ornamental birds free in the mountains is no different than killing them.
I asked Big Li, "Do you know how serious the ecological disaster your Brazilian turtles can cause?" Big Li was taken aback, "I just release them, I can't be responsible for the disaster they cause." Without understanding balance, one cannot discern good from evil, right from wrong. How can we talk about good results? This is not only about releasing animals. Many things are the same. Understanding balance and acting less ignorantly would be a virtue.
In the article " In Life, Balance is Moderation", I talked about good and evil, which is a thankless task. Because the topic of good and evil leads to moral associations, and morality is often used as a tool by some people, whether intentionally or unintentionally.
Understanding good and evil is a process of developing Shi (Cognition. Even if it's thankless, it should be discussed.
Good and evil are not binary opposites. What are good and evil? The maintenance of balance is good, and the best good is guiding balance. Acting recklessly against balance is evil, and the greatest evil is damaging balance.
For example: If a cockroach invades your home and you step on it, killing it, is this act good or evil? Some people say "not killing is good, killing is evil", others say "cockroaches are pests, killing evil is good". To define whether the insects are beneficial or harmful basing on people’s own interests, is this good or evil?
“Good and evil” is not equivalent to “setting free and killing.” It is not as simple as “to kill the evil is good.” Understanding good and evil should be based on a deep understanding of "balance".
As living beings, we each have our own field of balance. If a cockroach invades your space and disrupting your balance, "stepping on it and causing its death" is a backlash of balance. This is because balance in a specific indoor environment is dominated by the person who stepped on it. Some people might feel that the cockroach is unjust, as it doesn't know that there is a balance leader in the indoor environment. But such is balance, and so is backlash. In fact, aren't all creatures like this cockroach? In nature, when people damage the environment, thinking that man can conquer nature; in society, when some people are arrogant and overbearing above the rules; backlash will come although we cannot see the "foot stepping down".
The "karmic retribution" type of encouragement to do good through intimidation is of little significance because people will come up with more countermeasures against the variety of intimidations. In the Chapter of “Emotion”, I mentioned that life is a process of experiencing feelings. Goodness is a feeling originated from spirituality, not out of fear. If we love all creatures, we will know to cherish and to treat them kindly. What we can do is to achieve goodness through balance.
Why do people seek goodness? Because a good environment can provide a good and balanced conditions for the Physical Body and can provide a balanced Energy Field for the Yi Body. Balance is good and balance is the result. Understanding good and evil also requires distinguishing between foolish goodness and hypocritical goodness. "Do not judge a person as good or evil as others do and do not praise or criticize a person as others do." The understanding of knowledge stems from thought and wisdom is cultivated in this way.
