49. Adulthood Juvenile Syndrome

Adulthood is the age of maturity.

In legal terms, it refers to "citizens who have reached the statutory age and are therefore adults". Regardless of gender or condition, anyone who reaches the statutory age is considered an adult and enjoys corresponding legal rights. For instance: 18 years old, 20 years old, 21 years old, different regions have different regulations.

The phrase "We are all adults now" implies that "the truth speaks for itself".

There is a question that needs to be pondered: is there a direct proportion relationship between age and maturity? Age can signify physiological maturity, but mental maturity varies with age. Defining "adulthood" with age reflects the limitation of Jue (Perception) Shi (Cognition) at this stage, and it is commonly accepted across cultures and time.

However, the "Adulthood Juvenile Syndrome" discussed in this chapter does not refer to mental maturity. If one is mentally immature, regardless of age, they are considered a "minor".

The Adulthood Juvenile Syndrome refers to the situation where "although mental maturity is achieved, Jue (Perception) Shi (Cognition) is immature", which leads to "willfulness, conformity, and stubbornness". These are the three main symptoms of this syndrome.

Willfulness can lead to reckless behavior!

A child's willfulness is due to mental immaturity, and fortunately, they have guardians to supervise.

Adults become willful when they believe they have gained "certain power", leading to reckless actions.

For instance, when a businessman believes he has capital, he seeks monopoly; when a politician believes he has power, he tends towards autocracy. The worst part is: they only see "certain power" and overlook the "imbalance and rebound". Worse still, adults no longer have guardians.

Some say that "rule of law and self-discipline" can restrain willfulness. Actually, it is not necessarily so!

Because of willfulness, the rule of law secretly makes exceptions; they restrain others but not themselves; self-discipline is just a slogan, not a genuine belief.

The root of willfulness is "immature Jue (Perception) Shi (Cognition)", and the rule of law and self-discipline are not cures. Moreover, willfulness can also appear in other forms, for example, "weeding out the strong and supporting the weak, and being generous". The core is still willfulness. Being obsessed by ‘Xiang (Manifestation) of morality’, people haven not realized that "ignoring balance" is also recklessness.

Conformity can lead to anti-intellectualism!

It's not considered conformity when a child follows others blindly, as their minds are immature and they need supervision from their guardians.

Why would an adult with normal mental development conform blindly? This is not a question of psychology, but one of Jue (Perception) Shi (Cognition).

With immature Jue (Perception) Shi (Cognition), people cannot "discover themselves”, and it is difficult for them to have independent personality and independent thinking. Therefore, conformity becomes inevitable.

Conformists lack the ability to question and verify, and the ability to distinguish right from wrong. They are either self-righteous or being willfully kind, leading to anti-intellectualism! (Anti-intellectualism also refers to "contrary to Yi Philosophy")

For instance, some extreme left or right proposals in the West, even those that defy common sense, can pass because a certain number of voters (members) are blindly conformist, leading to anti-intellectualism. Conformity allows "deception and fooling" to run rampant, and society's civilization tends towards low frequency.

On a personal level, conformity will not bring growth, just as age does not bring maturity.

Stubbornness can destroy the self!

"Willfulness and conformity" are most likely to lead to stubbornness as a comorbidity.

Your cognition, your pursuits, and your life, all become narrow-minded due to stubbornness. Stubbornness restricts thought; Narrow-mindedness lowers the frequency of life, eventually destroying the self.

Stubborn individuals are not good at introspection, easily get trapped in emotions (both positive and negative), are easily manipulated and deceived, and thus often act extremely, becoming "slaves of emotions".

Once a person becomes stubborn, they will solidify their cognition and reject growth, thus losing the ability to "self-correct". The further from balance, the closer to the rebound, not only destroying themselves but also disrupting the lives of others.

For instance, a businessman becomes stubborn due to willfulness and does not stop until he crashes; a politician becomes stubborn due to willfulness and does not repent until all the hopes are dashed. Their pursuit is limited in low frequency and they are indulged in the desire of the Physical Body. Due to limited Jue (Perception) Shi (Cognition), their vision lacks foresight, and the tragedy keeps recurring.

Adulthood Juvenile Syndrome is both an individual and a social disease.

Many problems, concerning political, economic, family and emotional issues, all stem from this. Therefore, people should understand and pay attention to it. The cure for Adulthood Juvenile Syndrome is - growth of Jue (Perception) Shi (Cognition)! Understand Yi Philosophy in the process of growth and become mature in Jue (Perception) Shi (Cognition) through growth.
