3. The Strange Feeling

Could grogginess last that long? Actually, I thought about this at the time, and indeed I didn't take it seriously. So, the past was the past, and life went on as usual.

 

However, gradually, I felt something unusual in my life and that was the persistent strange feeling.

 

In the morning I got up with the grogginess, I was filled with unfamiliarity towards my surroundings, and then the familiarity slowly returned to my body. After that morning, I was filled with familiarity towards my surroundings, yet the unfamiliarity seemed to seep into my body silently, like a sprinkler or drip irrigation.

 

The longer you live in a place, the more familiar it feels, but at that time I felt that the longer I lived there, the more unfamiliar it became. This unfamiliarity does not mean that I could not recognize people or roads or where I was, but rather a lingering strange feeling towards my surroundings and the world.

 

It seemed that this feeling could grow with time, gradually accumulating. What’s more, the strangeness seemed to extend from the environment to people. Apart from friends and relatives, I gradually had that strange feeling of unfamiliarity towards others as well. It was like setting foot in a foreign land, being thrown into a foreign country, or even being tossed onto Mars. Even today, when I get on and off trains, wait at airports, or am in crowded downtown areas, I still feel that strange sensation filling every cell of my body, although I have gotten used to it.

 

This feeling may sound a bit inexplicable. Fortunately, this strange feeling did not grow infinitively. It did not disconnect me from the world or created any communication barriers with others. Instead, it gave me a feeling of being outside of everything. “This is everything I am familiar with, but I am outside of it.“ That was the feeling of looking at the world from outside of myself.

 

For some time after that, along with the strange feeling, there were also unusual dreams, some dreams I had never had before.

 

I dreamt that I woke up in endless darkness. This darkness was not the "pitch-black" that people usually describe, but a very tangible darkness. This darkness gave a sense of transparency and vastness. I floated in this endless darkness without fear. The boundless, transparent, and vast darkness permeated everything. Then, I woke up in my bed. Although the room was dark, there was faint light coming in through the window. It was no longer the transparent and vast darkness. I felt a little bewildered, wondering if I had really just woken up or if I had dreamt about waking up. If I had really woken up, what was that endless darkness? If I had dreamt of waking up, could there be a dream of such endless darkness? I couldn't give myself an answer, but I remembered the transparency and vastness of that darkness. After the confusion, I concluded that it was a unusual dream because I had never had such a dream before.

 

The strangeness of these dreams, as I mentioned, lies in the sense of reality they bring.
