36. About Charity

It is often thought that giving out money or things and doing good is charity. Recently there has been some debates about charity, so I will talk about charity from the view of Yi for the development of Shi (Cognition).

The word charity is made up of two characters (Ci and Shan) in Chinese and should be considered separately. Mercy (Ci) comes from the heart and kindness (Shan) is felt by the recipient. Therefore, charity is composed of these two parts, mercy and kindness. However, in many cases, Mercy (Ci) may not result in kindness (Shan) and kindness (Shan) may not come from Mercy (Ci).

Mercy may not result in kindness. There are many examples of this in life. When some people “mean well but end up doing harm”, they often feel aggrieved and innocent. They often say “We mean well, but they do not know to reflect themselves. The harm is caused by imposing what they think is mercy on others. This kind of mercy is not kind, but rather intentional or unintentional violence in the name of mercy on a high ground of morality.

Kindness may not come from mercy. There are also many such situations in life. Evildoers occasionally have a conscience and want to atone for their sins to feel at ease. In this case, there is no benevolent thoughts behind the good deeds. When they feel better in their conscience, their evil may even escalate. Those who seek fame are even more likely to harbor selfish intentions behind their good deeds. Once they gain what they want, they will try to get double returns. For them, charity is merely a tool.

I don't object to 'donating money and items to do good deeds,' but I want to tell everyone that this is only one form of charity. What is charity? Charity should be about creating and maintaining balance. Without the mentality of balance, 'donating money and items to do good deeds' could become misguided actions, disrupting the existing balance, and the end result may not necessarily be good. When disaster strikes, what we need is not only charity but also concerted efforts to rebuild balance.

For a country, having an honest and efficient government, impartial and fair judiciary, and guaranteed welfare for the people, creates balance. Enabling the society to run harmoniously within this balanced system is maintaining balance. This is charity that contributes to all the people.

For businesses or bosses, adhering to business ethics, providing fair pay, and treating employees humanely creates balance. Making employees feel secure and happy at work is maintaining balance. This is your charity to society. There's no need to grandiosely talk about 'giving back to society and donating money to charity after becoming rich.' Although this may be sincere, it is deceiving oneself and others. First do a good job of maintaining balance around you. This is a more practical form of charity.

For individuals, charity does not depend on how much money or items you donate each year or how much volunteer work you do. Rather, you need to ask yourself, have you done a good job of maintaining balance within your capabilities? Take good care of your pets from start to end, be kind to your own field. You're not required to help everyone. Everyone doing a good job of balancing within their own field is doing charity, both for others and for themselves.

Mercy comes from one's heart and is the inherent goodness of the Yi Body. When giving charity, one must understand balance, and pay attention to the feelings of the recipients. Kindness does not come from the mouth of the giver, but needs to be felt by the recipients. This is the true outcome of charity. Practice balance, and learn to be kind.
