6. Fish People

The goldfish magic in the Spring Festival Gala has caused a debate over whether the goldfish had been treated cruelly. No matter what the intention was, people argued about this out of kindness and is therefore quite comforting. Knowing to respect and treat vulnerable lives nicely is at least a manifestation of humanity and civilization.  

 

Additionally, there was a piece of foreign news: reportedly, the city government of Rome, Italy, has legislated against keeping goldfish in spherical fishbowls. The reason is that spherical fishbowls can confuse the fish's vision, causing them to see a distorted world. Keeping fish in such a container is considered a cruel act.

 

“You are not a fish. How do you know the joy of fish?” Are the fish in the spherical tank aware of this cruelty?

 

The first generation of fish placed in there, with their knowledge of the rivers and seas and yearning for freedom, would find it cruel, detesting this distorted world. But what about the generations of fish born in the fishbowl? Let's enlarge this spherical fishbowl, make it bigger and bigger...

 

In the long river of history, after prolonged reproduction, one day the goldfish gain intelligence and become "fish people." In this sphere, different groups of fish would build their own societies, even form nations, engaging in political and economic activities. They would also produce a culture, arts, philosophy, and religion belonging to the "fish people." And, there would be legends about the rivers and seas.

 

For the "fish people," this "distorted world" has become their objective reality. Based on this "objective reality," they derive a science of the spherical fishbowl. A "fish people chemistry" based on the material foundation within the bowl, a "fish people physics" under the distorted environment of the bowl – these can also guide the production and life of the "fish people." They discover and transform the world through this, constituting the truth for the "fish people."

 

The “fish human” all live in this very large spherical fish tank happily. If you tried to tell the "fish people" the truth about the world outside the fishbowl, you'd often be met with ridicule. The truth, perhaps, isn't important anymore.

 

One day, the "fish people" may ponder: "What is the meaning of life? Why are we living in this sphere? Is it natural or created? What's outside the sphere? …

 

I believe that there will be some "fish people" in the bowl who yearn for enlightenment.
